The Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA) hosted the first ever Annual Resident Associations Excellence Awards (AREA) Ceremony on 2nd December 2017 at Sarit Centre from 4pm to 6pm. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Judi Wakhungu, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources. AREA is designed to reward Resident Associations that have demonstrated exemplary performance in promoting sustainable development and access to better public services in Kenya. It address the twin issue of celebrating the work of Resident Associations in Kenya and rewarding those that have done exceptionally well in influencing provision of better services as well as championing the interests of their members. The awards are also intended to promote learning and stimulate positive competition aimed at promoting effectiveness of Resident Associations in the service delivery agenda.

The winners were identified through a public driven and interactive process which included Resident Associations or the public making entries for the various award categories. The 8 categories were: Mazingira, Usalama, Maji, Mihadarati, Ujenzi, Viwanja, Afya and Mawasiliano. Out of the 49 entries submitted by various Resident Associations, 15 winners were identified and awarded at the colorful ceremony. The winners were as follows:

 Speaking at the award ceremony, Prof. Wakhungu applauded the winners and pointed out that Resident Associations have a central role in promoting sustainable socio-economic development. He urged the Associations to continue engaging the government in a constructive way and supporting initiatives aimed to improving services and the living standards of Kenyans.

The need to organize the awards was informed by the fact that Resident Associations play a very vital role in enhancing access to public services and improving quality of life in Kenya yet these efforts are rarely recognized and appreciated. Additionally, the awards hope to focus public attention on the importance of Resident Associations in promoting structured engagement with the government and improving service delivery in Kenya.

The Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA) has organized the 2nd KARA Business Expo & Conference to be held on December 1 – 3, 2017 at the Sarit Centre, Nairobi. The event under the theme Enhancing the quality of urban life through resident associations, will bring together exhibitors from Government, private sector, civil society, academia among others, to showcase their products, services and capacity to serve the market. The participating sponsors, partners and exhibitors will have an opportunity to meet and interact with thousands of exhibition visitors and conference participants drawn from Resident Associations, business associations, institutions of higher learning, civil society and the general public with the possibility of expanding their networks, sealing deals and broadening their clientele base. 

Besides the exhibition, there will be a Conference running concurrently and featuring distinguished speakers on urban development agenda. The conference will provide an opportunity for various stakeholders to have a conversation on urban development and how it can be nurtured and streamlined to enhance quality of life in Kenya. 

The highlight of the event will be the debut Annual Resident Associations Excellence Awards (AREA). The awards, which is the first of its kind, is designed to reward Resident Associations that have demonstrated exemplary performance in promoting sustainable development and access to better public services in Kenya. AREA addresses the twin issue of celebrating the work of Resident Associations in Kenya and rewarding those that have done exceptionally well in influencing provision of better services and championing the interests of their members.
